Tips Interior

Anything is possible.

Tips for DIY home improvement & interior design  Interior architects turn dreams into reality.

In both domestic and commercial buildings – even ambitious DIY fans struggle with planning and designing rooms. For this reason we recommend taking advantage of a professional when (re-)designing your living or working environment. Interior architects draw up an overall concept for their clients which is tailor made to the client’s wishes and personality whilst making as few compromises as possible.

The four graduate engineers, Caroline von Brandstein, Margret Marx, Elisabeth Nettekoven and Cordula Pille, based in Düsseldorf bring a decent atmopshere to the home. LOGOCLIC® spoke to the interior architects at emzweic about how DIY dreams are realised.

What is the fundamental difference between designing for domestic- and commercial spaces?

emzweic:
The design of living spaces reflects the personality of the individual. Private life and atmosphere are at the fore. In contrast, in commercial properties, function has a decisive role. The requirements on these kind of rooms are accordingly not the same. However, in both cases, a balance is struck between functionality and a pleasant atmosphere. Usually speaking commercial properties are used by a variety of people. The design therefore needs to take into account the particular target group. A private living space can be given a completely individual design and need only consider the personal needs of the people who live in it.

How do you go about planning and realisation?

emzweic:
In the beginning, a requirements specification is drawn up for the project with the client. In the next step, an initial draft is presented with evocative images which can be used to sketch out at least a rough idea. In this phase we clear up other details which are worked out in the draft phase with the client's involvement. Colours and materials are presented and chosen using samples. At the same time, the costs of the project are worked out and the trades needed to carry it out are chosen. After the implementation- and detailed planning phases, the project is then realised. The client plays an active part in all phases to allow his ideas to flow into the process.

How important are current home- and furnishing trends?

emzweic:
It really depends on the project and its requirements specification. Trends are taken into account but durability, timelessness and individuality are more important during planning.

Where do trends come from?

emzweic:
Fashion, lifestyle, the spirit of the times, even political events have an influence on the development of trends. History is also important, classic design comes back time and time again.

What are the current trends?

emzweic:
Purism, comic, punk, graffiti, strong contrasts in terms of colours and materials.

What is seen as a complete no-go?

emzweic:
There’s nothing which is a no-go.

What is the significance of colours and materials?

emzweic:
As well as creating form, colours and materials also give each room an atmosphere. The combination of both enables us to create different sensual worlds and an individual aura.

To what extent does the personality of the person who will live in the room have an influence on planning?

emzweic:
The client’s personality is important during planning. We find out about their likes and dislikes in detailed discussions and these flow into the design.

What needs to be taken into account during the floor and wall design?

emzweic:
It is important that the combination produces a harmonious concept and a consistent feeling from the room.

What tips can you give to people on the way who want to try interior designing their rooms without professional help?

emzweic:
To begin with, they should collect their impressions with an open mind, define what colours and materials they like and to visualise them wherever possible. He can then use a rough floor plan to apply these ideas to his home. He should not ignore functionality when choosing a floor covering. Light is also important: Incoming light always affect colours and materials differently. For this reason you should sample your selection on large areas of the rooms.
